* Super Charters
Cruise lines are having a "Super" weekend at
Jacksonville, and they are providing a spectacle the city
isn't likely to see again soon - if ever.
The city's Super Bowl organizers chartered five cruise
ships to solve the area's housing shortage for the major
event. The ships were part of the city's plan from the
beginning, and after a couple of years of work,
everything is finally in place: Six cruise ships (five
they chartered, and another which was chartered by a firm
that saw an opportunity to capitalize on the city's
shortage of hotel space) are in port - and everywhere
else they can possibly dock.
Carnival Miracle, Zaandam, Zuiderdam, Volendam and
Seven Seas Navigator were chartered by the city's Super
Bowl organizers, and Silver Wind was chartered privately.
They are providing 3,819 hotel rooms as well as 41
lounges, restaurants and entertainment venues.
During this charter, the ships aren't necessarily
operating with typical onboard cruise ship life as most
readers know it. They will probably provide enough of a
taste of it, however, to woo some guests back for a real
cruise.
(Those Superbowl partiers better not trash my first ever category 11!! ;))
